Despite a political backlash across Europe, Tesla Inc. continues to dominate electric vehicle sales in Norway, recording a sharp rise in sales due to the popularity of its upgraded Model Y. While sales slump in key markets like Germany and France, Norway’s EV-friendly policies and consumer demand for functional, affordable EVs keep Tesla strong in the region.

Amid growing political backlash across Europe, U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Inc. has witnessed a surprising upswing in Norway, with sales of its revamped Model Y skyrocketing. According to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), Tesla recorded a 54% year-on-year rise in new car sales in Norway in June 2025.

This surge was largely driven by a 115.3% increase in registrations of the updated Model Y SUV, further solidifying Tesla’s grip in the world’s most electric vehicle-friendly nation. The growth follows a staggering 213% jump in Tesla car sales in May, reinforcing its dominance despite a broader European slump.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Tesla Inc. is a global leader in electric mobility and sustainable energy. Known for its innovative vehicle lineup and CEO Elon Musk’s controversial public persona, Tesla has seen mixed responses globally—none more polarized than in Europe.

Across other parts of Europe, the picture is less optimistic. Tesla’s sales in Germany—the continent’s largest automotive market—fell 60% in June, while sales in France also declined. Meanwhile, sales in Spain rose 61%, and Portugal saw a modest 7% increase.

Despite CEO Elon Musk’s political entanglements, including support for far-right groups and Donald Trump’s administration, Norwegians remain divided. A recent survey by the Norwegian EV Association (NEVA) showed that 43% of EV drivers in the country would avoid buying a Tesla due to political reasons.

Still, Tesla’s product offerings—particularly the Model Y—continue to align well with Norwegian consumer demands: spacious interiors, all-wheel drive, high ground clearance, and competitive pricing.

Tesla delivers a car with a lot of value for money and fits what Norwegians need.”

Christina Bu, Secretary General of NEVA.

Norway, long celebrated as a global leader in clean transportation, has pioneered policies incentivizing EV ownership. The country is poised to eliminate new sales of gasoline and diesel cars by the end of the decade. Supportive initiatives include VAT exemptions, reduced road and parking taxes, and robust EV charging infrastructure.

Norwegian Deputy Transport Minister Cecilie Knibe Kroglund attributed this shift to “a combination of tax incentives, infrastructure, and consistent policymaking.”

With Norway offering a unique blend of consumer preference and supportive policies, Tesla’s position in the country remains strong—even as it battles brand challenges elsewhere across the continent.
