Jewellers in Lucknow have collectively decided to boycott Turkish jewellery due to Turkiye’s support for Pakistan amid recent tensions with India. This move includes halting imports, cancelling existing orders, and discontinuing the sale and display of Turkish-designed items. The action marks a strong response from the local trade community in protest against geopolitical developments.
Jewellers in Lucknow have taken a decisive stand by announcing a complete boycott of Turkish jewellery, following Turkiye’s vocal support for Pakistan during recent hostilities involving India. This collective decision from the local trade community reflects a strong economic and symbolic protest against geopolitical alignments that contradict India’s national interests.
According to Manish Kumar Verma, President of the Lucknow Mahanagar Sarafa Association, jewellers have stopped selling and importing Turkish-designed jewellery altogether. “Earlier, we used to import Turkish casting designs, particularly silver jewellery. But now, after Operation Sindoor and Turkiye’s public support for Pakistan, all imports have been halted, and pending orders cancelled,” Verma confirmed.
This move is expected to significantly affect the local jewellery trade, particularly as Turkish jewellery had been popular among customers in the region and was in high demand during recent festivals like Akshaya Tritiya.
Another prominent jeweller, Abhishek Dutta, echoed this sentiment, stating that there is now a complete boycott of Turkish jewellery, including its design and finished products. The decision, though drastic, has garnered strong support from the city’s jewellers, signaling a unified and coordinated response.
While the boycott is specific to the jewellery sector in Lucknow, it highlights a growing trend where trade and commerce are increasingly influenced by geopolitical considerations. India’s trade with Turkiye spans a wide array of sectors, including mineral fuels, electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and plastics. Although the jewellery sector may represent a small portion of this trade, such symbolic actions can carry wider implications.
By withdrawing support for Turkish goods, Lucknow’s jewellers are sending a clear message about the importance of aligning economic decisions with national sentiment and diplomatic priorities.
As global events continue to shape bilateral relations, similar actions by local business communities could emerge elsewhere in India, potentially impacting broader trade dynamics between the two nations.
