The Income Tax Department of India has opened its online portal for Assessment Year 2025–26, guiding first-time taxpayers through form selection, tax regime choice, and deductions to ensure error-free ITR filing.
The Income Tax Department of India, functioning under the Ministry of Finance, has activated its portal for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025–26. This rollout enables first-time taxpayers across states like Maharashtra to begin their ITR submissions online. However, the process can be complex, requiring attention to detail and awareness of important guidelines.
1. Report All Sources of Income
Even if earnings fall below the taxable limit, taxpayers must declare all income sources. Essential documents include PAN, Aadhaar, Form 16 for salaried employees, bank interest certificates, and capital gains or rental income details.
2. Choose Between Two Tax Regimes
Taxpayers must select either the old or new tax regime. The old regime allows for multiple deductions (like Sections 80C, 80D), while the new one offers lower tax rates with fewer exemptions. A comparative assessment helps determine the most beneficial option.
3. Maximize Eligible Deductions
Several deductions are available, including those under Section 80C (investments), 80D (health insurance), and 80E (education loan interest). Salaried employees may claim exemptions on House Rent Allowance and Leave Travel Allowance.
4. Use the Correct ITR Form
There are seven ITR forms depending on income type. Choosing the wrong form or failing to report income accurately can lead to rejection. Double-check all entries and documents before submission.
5. Complete E-Verification on Time
After filing, it is mandatory to complete e-verification within 30 days to validate the return. This step confirms the authenticity of the submitted ITR and ensures the return is processed.
With simplified digital systems in place, India’s income tax portal allows efficient filing, but first-time users should stay cautious and well-informed to avoid delays and rejections.
