The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will issue Rs 20 banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series bearing the signature of new RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, effective December 11, 2024. The notes will maintain the existing design and features. All previously issued Rs 20 notes will remain legal tender.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it will soon issue ₹20 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series featuring the signature of its new Governor, Sanjay Malhotra. This update comes as part of the customary procedure followed with the appointment of a new central bank governor.
The design and security features of the new ₹20 notes will remain consistent with the existing notes currently in circulation. As clarified in the RBI’s official communication, all previously issued ₹20 banknotes—including those bearing the signatures of former governors—will continue to be legal tender and remain valid for transactions.
Sanjay Malhotra officially assumed office as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on December 11, 2024. With the issuance of these new notes, his signature will begin appearing on all freshly printed ₹20 currency notes, marking his tenure on India’s monetary instruments.
This move is part of a routine central banking operation and does not signify any change in the existing currency design or its security features. It simply reflects the update in the leadership of the central bank.
The ₹20 banknote is a commonly used denomination and is widely circulated across the country. The RBI’s reaffirmation that older notes remain valid helps ensure there is no disruption in day-to-day transactions and maintains public confidence in the currency system.
