Indian-origin tech executive Uday Ruddarraju has resigned from Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI after a year-long tenure, and joined OpenAI, the San Francisco-based AI research firm. Ruddarraju expressed gratitude towards Elon Musk and described the experience of working on Grok and Colossus as a career highlight.

Uday Ruddarraju, the Indian-origin Head of Infrastructure at xAI, has officially stepped down from his role after a one-year tenure and joined leading artificial intelligence research company OpenAI, based in San Francisco, California.

xAI, founded by Elon Musk, is known for building Grok, an advanced conversational AI model and the company’s flagship product. Ruddarraju played a key role in deploying large-scale infrastructure and overseeing the development of Grok 3 and the foundational compute platform Colossus.

After an unforgettable ride, I’ve decided to move on from xAI. Watching us deploy over 100K GPUs and successfully train Grok 3 made me incredibly proud… Thank you Elon Musk for the rare opportunity.”

Ruddarraju highlighted the unique culture of execution at xAI and praised Elon Musk’s leadership, saying reporting directly to Musk and learning from him was the most valuable part of his experience.

“Jensen Huang was right,” he added, referring to Nvidia’s CEO, “Elon and his teams are singular in what they can achieve.”

Shortly after his departure, OpenAI’s President and Co-Founder Greg Brockman announced the onboarding of Ruddarraju through a post on X. Ruddarraju confirmed the move by reposting and replying,

“Excited to join you, Greg Brockman!”

Ruddarraju’s move to OpenAI comes at a critical time in the AI landscape, as competition intensifies between leading AI firms such as xAI, OpenAI, and Google DeepMind.

This leadership shift also follows the recent departure of other high-ranking personnel at X and xAI, including X CEO Linda Yaccarino.

With his rich experience in AI infrastructure and proven ability to meet massive deployment goals, Ruddarraju is expected to play a significant role in OpenAI’s next phase of research and scaling efforts.
