Google co-founder Sergey Brin has gifted approximately 4.1 million Alphabet shares worth $700 million. The recipient remains undisclosed, but the donation aligns with Brin’s history of large philanthropic gestures, including support for Parkinson’s research and climate-focused initiatives.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has gifted approximately 4.1 million Alphabet Inc. shares, valued at nearly $700 million, according to recent regulatory filings. The recipient of the shares remains undisclosed, but the move is consistent with Brin’s longstanding philanthropic activity.
The stock transfer, split between newly converted Class A and Class C shares, has sparked speculation that the beneficiary could be a charitable organization, private trust, or philanthropic fund. Brin, with a net worth exceeding $140 billion as per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, ranks among the world’s top 10 wealthiest individuals.
Brin’s charitable footprint includes significant contributions to Parkinson’s disease research and a climate-health nonprofit that funds a variety of initiatives, from psychedelic therapies to a $155 billion clean energy project in Copenhagen. In 2023, Brin donated shares worth $600 million, and additional gifts in May and November 2024 totaled more than $100 million combined.
The latest donation comes at a time when Alphabet’s stock is surging. On May 21, shares rose 5.6% following the announcement of major artificial intelligence updates to Google Search at its annual developer conference. The company is introducing a new “AI Mode” tab, offering users direct interaction with AI models, a feature seen as a strategic response to platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Alphabet’s stock classes have played a critical role in the structure of the gift. Class A shares, often issued to founders and top management, carry significant voting rights. Class C shares, typically issued to employees, do not carry voting rights and may include trading restrictions. Both classes currently trade at similar market prices.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index reports that Brin and fellow Google co-founder Larry Page saw a combined $7 billion increase in their net worth on May 21 alone. Page is now the 9th richest person globally with a fortune of $153.2 billion, just ahead of Brin at $144.3 billion.
Brin’s wealth primarily stems from Class B and Class C shares of Alphabet. Notably, he still holds more than $11 billion worth of stock from Google’s landmark IPO in 2004.
While the identity of the recipient remains unknown, this $700 million gift adds to Brin’s growing legacy of leveraging his tech-driven wealth for high-impact philanthropy.
