OpenAI, the US-based artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has established its India unit and plans to open its first office in New Delhi in 2025. The move highlights India’s growing importance as one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets with a fourfold increase in ChatGPT usage over the past year.
OpenAI, The United States-based artificial intelligence company best known as the creator of ChatGPT, has officially set up a local unit in India and plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year. The move underscores the importance of India in OpenAI’s global strategy, with the country becoming one of its largest and fastest-growing markets.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT’s weekly active users in India have quadrupled over the past year, making India the second-largest market by users and ranking among the top five global developer markets. India also accounts for the largest population of students using ChatGPT worldwide.

The India office will focus on strengthening OpenAI’s collaboration with local partners, businesses, developers, governments, and academic institutions. OpenAI has already launched India-specific initiatives, including:
- ChatGPT Go – an affordable subscription at ₹399/month with UPI integration.
- OpenAI Academy – a nationwide AI literacy program with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
- Enhanced Indic language support – the GPT-5 model has made significant gains in Indic language benchmarks.
- Study Mode – an interactive learning mode designed for students.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, stating, “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
To deepen its engagement, OpenAI will host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by its first Developer Day in India later this year. The company has also started local hiring to build its India team.
