India launches semiconductor pilot line to boost chip manufacturing.

CG Semi, a Murugappa Group, India’s subsidiary, has inaugurated a semiconductor pilot line in Gujarat with backing from the India Semiconductor Mission. The project supported by Renesas Electronics and Stars Microelectronics, intends to elevate India’s position in worldwide chip manufacturing.

The facility that is newly established in Sanand, Gujarat is part of a ₹7,600 crore (USD 912 million) project of CG Semi, with 50% financial aid from the Indian government. Alongside the project, the company is holding strategic alliances with Renesas Electronics, an American company, and Stars Microelectronics, a Thai company, both of which contribute their profound technical knowledge to the venture.

India’s First ISM-Cleared Pilot Line

The Sanand pilot line is the initial one among the ten projects given the go-ahead under the ₹76,000 crore (USD 9.12 billion) ISM program to commence operations. The commissioning of the line will only consist in the production of qualifying chips for customers with the potential to scale to full commercial production later, reaching about five lakh chips a day in capacity.

The Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Union Minister Vaishnaw, together with the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, performed the inauguration of the facility. Mr. Vaishnaw exhorted that the establishment would commence the production of chips “very soon” and praised the achievement as an indication of India’s fast movement in the semiconductor sector.
