Roshni Nadar became the world’s fifth-richest woman and the first Indian woman in the global top 10.
Reliance Industries, based in Maharashtra, India, continues to dominate the country’s corporate sector with its vast influence across energy, telecommunications, and retail. Despite a significant decline in net worth, its chairman, Mukesh Ambani, remains the richest person in India, according to the Hurun Global Rich List 2025, released on March 27.
Ambani’s fortune currently stands at ₹8.6 lakh crore, reflecting a ₹1 lakh crore decline from the previous year, primarily attributed to rising debt levels within Reliance Industries. Despite the drop, Ambani retains his lead over Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, whose wealth surged by 13% to reach ₹8.4 lakh crore.
Ambani Falls Out of Global Top 10 Wealthiest
The fall in Ambani’s net worth has resulted in his exit from the global top 10 wealthiest individuals. However, India continues to make strides in global wealth rankings. According to Hurun, India is home to 284 billionaires, adding 13 new names to the list. The country ranks third globally in billionaire count, following China and the United States. Mumbai, Maharashtra, remains India’s billionaire hub, housing 90 of them.
Roshni Nadar Enters Global Top 10 Women Billionaires
In a major milestone, Roshni Nadar, chairperson of HCL Technologies, based in Uttar Pradesh, became the world’s fifth-richest woman with a net worth of ₹3.5 lakh crore. She also became the first Indian woman to enter the global top 10 richest women list. This achievement follows her father, Shiv Nadar’s, decision to transfer a 47% stake in HCL to her.
India’s Billionaire Growth and Key Trends
The Hurun Global Rich List 2025 reports that the world now has 3,442 billionaires, an increase of 5% from last year. Indian billionaires contributed 7% of the total wealth on the list, with seven making it into the Hurun Top 100.
While 27 Indian billionaires dropped off the list, the country continued to expand its billionaire presence. Notably, India led in family-run businesses among billionaires. Additionally, India and China recorded the highest number of emigrant billionaires, while the United States remained dominant with immigrant billionaires.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, retained his position as the world’s richest individual in 2025.
