Apple Inc. has officially named Sabih Khan, an Indian-origin executive, as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). The transition marks a pivotal leadership move within the American technology giant, as Khan prepares to succeed the current COO later this month.
Khan, a veteran at Apple since 1995, is currently serving as Vice President of Operations. His promotion reflects not only his deep institutional knowledge but also his critical role in engineering Apple’s complex global supply chain—a core function that has underpinned the company’s product consistency and scale.
Apple CEO praised Khan’s leadership style, referring to him as one of the key architects of the company’s supply chain and a strategist who helped navigate global disruptions with agility. His leadership, the CEO emphasized, combines both values-driven execution and technical prowess.
Born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh (India) in 1966 and raised in Singapore, Khan’s academic background includes a dual degree in economics and mechanical engineering from Tufts University, followed by a master’s in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His early career at GE Plastics (now SABIC) laid the foundation for his technical and managerial expertise.
Since joining Apple, Sabih Khan has been at the helm of several key transformations in procurement, logistics, and manufacturing, and more recently led initiatives in green manufacturing and supplier responsibility. Under his supervision, Apple successfully reduced its carbon footprint by more than 60%, reflecting the company’s shift towards sustainable operations.
In 2019, he was elevated to Senior Vice President of Operations, leading a range of responsibilities from global manufacturing partnerships to product fulfillment. Sabih Khan also oversees Apple’s commitment to employee welfare at manufacturing sites globally, a cornerstone of the company’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policy.
His new role as COO comes at a time when Apple is focusing heavily on resilience in global operations, reducing geopolitical dependency, and scaling manufacturing capabilities in the US. Khan’s technical background and environmental vision are expected to drive Apple’s next phase of operational and sustainability leadership.
This appointment also reflects the broader trend of Indian-origin leaders rising to pivotal roles across US-based multinational corporations, particularly in the technology and innovation sectors.
With this change, Apple reiterates its commitment to engineering-led management and sustainable growth, reinforcing its position as one of the most influential companies in the global economy.
